Masking/selective anodising can be achieved here at Mansfield Anodisers. We mask components using methods with specialist paint, tape, bungs, plugs, screws and rubber washers.
Masking is recommended primarily for electrical contact points, but we can also apply it for maintaining tight tolerances or other specific needs.
Masking is used to protect specific areas of a component from the anodising process, such as when threads need to remain free from anodising.
To maintain both conductivity and corrosion resistance, masked areas are typically coated with SurTec 650, which also helps with bonding. This can be customised to meet specific customer requirements.
We work closely with our customers to achieve the best possible finish. In some cases, maintaining precise dimensions without masking may be the most effective solution. “Etching to maintain” allows for controlled material removal while ensuring accuracy.
If you have specific masking or tolerance requirements, contact us to discuss the best approach for your components.
To achieve the desired appearance and quality, surface treatments may be required before anodising. We offer finishing options such as bright, matte, or satin, tailoring the final look to your specifications.
This is achieved by using either blasting, linishing, polishing and other methods. However, to remove light surface scratches and machine marks, an extended etch may be the best option.
Pre-anodising finishing also helps remove imperfections, as defects can become more visible after anodising. Our expert finishing ensures a high-quality, visually appealing result.

Etching is a pre-treatment that enhances the final appearance of anodised components. By selectively removing aluminium from the surface, it ensures a clean, fresh foundation for anodising.
Minimal etch – Retains a shiny, specular finish.
Extended etch – Removes more material for a consistent, matte finish.
Etching to maintain dimensions – Precisely controlled to compensate for anodising buildup, aiming to preserve the part’s original dimensions within acceptable tolerances.

PTFE dispersion coating improves the lubricity and release properties of anodised surfaces, reducing friction and enhancing wear resistance. This non-invasive process deposits a thin, uniform PTFE layer onto unsealed, dyed, or sealed anodised surfaces without risk of damage. Best applied to freshly anodised surfaces, it forms a strong bond for optimal performance.
Key Benefits:
✔ Enhanced lubrication – reduces friction & wear
✔ Non-reactive – repels contaminants & prevents adhesion
✔ Reduced fingerprint marking – resists oils & moisture
✔ Versatile – suitable for anodised & non-anodised surfaces
Note: Excess PTFE may leave a milky sheen, and coated areas won’t bond with paint, labels, or adhesives.

At Mansfield Anodisers, we offer Titanium Anodising in accordance with ISO 8080 standards. This process typically results in a striking blue-violet finish.
Titanium anodising is renowned for its vibrant and attractive colours, making it an excellent choice for colour-coding components. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the anodised surface provides improved anti-galling properties, making it particularly suitable for nuts, bolts, bearings, and shafts.
The anodised coating is extremely thin when applied to ISO 8080 specifications. The colours are not pigments but result from a refractive oxide layer, which produces unique hues.
